Have you ever wondered if aromatherapy can be part of a healthy lifestyle? It absolutely can!
I am delighted to be hosting a guest author Melissa Curran from Scented Balance

Introduction to Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
My name is Melissa Curran and I am a Certified Aromatherapist, Holistic Life Coach and Owner of Scented Balance. Aromatherapy is my passion and I love to share how it’s a more natural and simple way to take charge of your overall well being.
Up until the mid-twentieth century, most medicines used by doctors were plant-based and consisted of aromatic herbs, botanicals and essential oils that have been around for thousands of years.
There is both an art and science to aromatherapy. The art consists of observation of how the energetic qualities affect you over centuries of use. The science consists of testing the physical properties under strictly controlled circumstances.
Essential oils are the “essence” of the aromatic plant extracted most often by steam distillation or cold pressing. They are used to balance, harmonize and promote body, mind and spirit.
As an aromatherapist, my clients come to me for help in addressing many everyday issues such as:
- Sinus and allergies
- Headaches and migraines
- Pain, chronic and occasional
- Eczema and psoriasis
When blending for specific issues, I listen carefully to what concerns my client. When they talk about having stress headaches, I blend proven analgesic oils to relieve the pain itself, but I always look deeper and include oils that help address the underlying stress itself.
Why you should try essential oils
Essential oils have an amazing capacity to calm, uplift, release and to address pain and infection. Many oils are proven anti-microbials, anti-virals and anti-fungals. In short, essential oils are capable of promoting balance in your daily life.
I don’t want you to think for a moment that essential oils are a magic bullet that can “fix” years of poor lifestyle choices – nothing can do that! What they can do is enhance a healthy lifestyle and allow you to address many everyday issues with more ease and elegance.
If there is only one thing that I could help you learn, it’s that you – and only you – can heal your body. When you nourish your body using the right tools, you give yourself a much better chance for enhanced health.
Just about any doctor will tell you that given the right tools, the human body has an amazing capacity for healing itself. What we’ve done as television watchers is convince ourselves that a simple pill prescribed by the doctor will fix bad habits and we’ll magically be well. This a lie perpetuated by the drug and insurance companies.
Synthetic pills always have side effects. You may take a little purple pill for heartburn and end up with your cholesterol numbers going up. Then you have to take cholesterol medication to keep that under control which gives you a headache. Then you need another pill to address the headache (and maybe other side effects) from the cholesterol medication and it becomes a vicious cycle with more pills and more side effects.
Seriously, as a nation, we NEED to get up off the couch, stop watching so much television and surfing the internet. I’ve heard for several years that sitting has now become the new smoking. Our bodies are made to move!
Eating clean food makes a huge difference in your health. I firmly believe that medicine is sickcare and good, clean food is healthcare. Think about that for just a moment.
Essential Oil Recipes
Okay – so back to how aromatherapy can enhance your health. Using essential oils every single day can help keep small issues just that. Here are some ways you can use essential oils every day:
- Headache – 5 drops each of Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) and Peppermint (Mentha x peperita) mixed in with a teaspoon of Argan oil and apply directly to your forehead, temples and the back of your neck.
- Upset Stomach – 10 drops of Peppermint (Mentha x peperita) mixed with coconut oil and apply to your stomach and colon area.
- Mold – 20 drops each of Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternafolia), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) together with 16 ounces of 100 proof vodka in a spray bottle (you can get them at a dollar store) and shake well. Spray on your shower curtain and around the tub spout and handles after each shower.
- Cleaning Solution: 20 drops each of Lemon (Citrus limon), Rosemary (Rosemarinus officiale), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus, Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) and Oregano (Origanum vulgare) into equal parts white vinegar and distilled water. Shake well before each use. Great for basin, tub, tile, mirrors – please do not use on marble or granite.
Where to Buy Essential Oils
You can get Argan Oil at places like Whole Foods or the Vitamin Shoppe. The company I use for essential oils is Aromatics International. This company uses distillers from around the world that employ ethical and sustainable practices and their oils are organic and pesticide-free. It’s very important to know that not just any essential oil will do. If you’re using cheap essential oils that are not organic or therapeutic-grade, you may not get the same results. That’s why I use Aromatics because I know their oils are pure.
This is just the tip of the iceberg – there’s more information on my website at http://scentedbalance.com.
